Abstract
The results of the deep sea observations carried out near the center of the Kurile-Kamchatka Trench on board the Takuyo in May, 1962 are as follows. (1) The deepest depth is about 9600 meters. (2) In the Kurile-Kamchatka Trench, the potential temperature increases at the rate of 0.02°C/1000 m with depth below the depth of 6000m. On the other hand, the oxygen content decreases with depth and the chlorinity decreases more slowly, having the maximum at the depth of 5000-6000 meters, which corresponds to the Pacific Ocean bed. (3) There exists southwest-ward geostrophic current of about 5cm/sec at the depth of 5000 m. (4) In the depth of 5000-6000 meters, the ratio of diffusion coefficient to velocity, k/u, is about 150 in C. G. S. unit.
