Abstract

Recently for marine purpose there is a greater demand for medium sized diesel engines than for large engines, and accordingly, maintenance in case of using bunker oil for the former is more difficult than the latter. This paper refers to the problem of fuel and lube oils applied for these engines with respect to their maintenance, and is intended to explain generally the result of laboratory test of oils made by the writers. With regard to fuel oil, it is necessitated that firm specification shall be completed and that necessary quantity of products shall be available anywhere. With regard to cylinder lude oil, the writer mainly takes up a problem in this paper how to consider on adaptability of high alkaline oil. If similar type engines are used, high grade oil should still be applied for those engines which are used in high loaded and more continuous condition with less frequent overhauling. With regard to crank case oil, there is one problem, that is, sufficient purification and replacement of oil should be carried out in timely period.
