For safe ship handling it is necessary to predict the steering quality of a ship with sufficient accuracy at an early stage of design. For this prediction, correlation of steering quality between model and ship must be investigated, although steering quality of model itself can be directly evaluated by a free-running model test or can be predicted by a mathematical model based upon some captive model test. In the present paper, we propose some model-ship correlation formulars about rudder effectiveness and rudder torque, which is found from the experimental results of a 564,000 DWT ULCC and its scale model. They are also confirmed by other ULCCs' experimental results.
