Abstract

The pressure compensated,oil-filled cable system, constructed from cable, receptacle, plug and junction box, has been tested and confirmed in the practicability to work on deep submergence research vehicle and other deep sea equipments at 6000m depth. In the first paper, it was reported that the cables, receptacles and plugs were manufactured for trial and tested successfully as the first step of research and development for the oil-filled cable system. The continual development was carried out for the purpose of estimating the capability of oil-filled cable's total system. Oil-filled cables, connectors-both pressure-proof receptacles and oil-filled plugs-including AWG#16 × 48 multi-contacts type, and oil-filled junction box were individually tested, connected each other and tested in the hydrostatic pressure vessel. The test results including the characteristics in the hydrostatic pressure-max. 938kgf/cm^2- were completely satisfying to confirm the practicability of this system. Besides the test of total system, oil-filled right-angle plug was manufactured for trial and tested successfully at max. 938kgf/cm^2. As a results, it was verified this type of oil-filled plug, especially useful for small vehicles from point of space saving, was equally as useful as straight plug. In this paper, the contents of these trial productions, tests and results of oil-filled cable system and right-angle plug are reported.
