Abstract

Hitachi Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. Ltd. has been building uniflow type diesel engines under license of Burmeister & Wain, Denmark, since 1950, and also completed, in 1955, the first Alpha type diesel engine and controllable pitch propeller in Japan, for which B & W has years' experience in manufacturing. In this Paper, the outline of the construction, feature and operation of the Alpha engine and propeller are illustrated, and then the result of sea trial of the fishing boat "SHONAN MARU" equipped with Alpha 405 VO type engine and controllable pitch propeller is described.
