Epidemiological Study on the “Infectious Column Myelitis”-A Myelitis Following Abdominal Signs

Abstract

In recent years, hereafter 1961, epidemics of “infectious column myelitis” due to ECHO type 21 infection, a myelitis following abdominal signs have been reproted with increasing frequency.
On the other hand, in 1961, Sabin's live poliovirus vaccine have been administered to children less than 10 years of age to control epidemic of poliomylitis in Japan.
In 1965, five hundred ninety-three different blood samples have been collected from healthy individuals under 80 years of age in Fukuoka Prefecture, and the neutralizing antibody titers of ECHO type 21 were examined. Antibody titers of 4 or higher will be referred to as “positive” and lower as “negative”.
The antibody possessing ratio of healthy children under 15 years of age were 10 to 20 percent higher than children over 15 years for ECHO type 21 virus.
Relationship between the administeration of live poliovirus vaccine and the recent increase tendency of “infectious column myelitis” due to ECHO type 21 virus were also discussed.
