Abstract
A 37-year-old female was admitted to Hokkaido University Hospital because of an abdominal distension due to ascites. Laboratory and imaging studies revealed the signs of portal hypertension with hypersplenism and raised the suspicion of the presence of liver cirrhosis. We performed laparotomy and found approximately 1000 ml of ascites, the liver divided into more than twenty lobes and splenomegaly. The patient underwent splenectomy. She died with hepatic failure 19 years after surgery.
