Abstract

This preliminary study was perfbrmed in order to stimulate regeneration of cirrhotic liver caused by partial hepatectomy by giving liver hydrolysate containing precursors of nucleic acids and oligopeptides.
In normal rat liver, a proper medication of the liver hydrolysates gave rise to significant increases both in incorporation of 3H-TdR into the DNA of regenerating liver and in the mitochondrial ATP synthesis of liver.
The cells of experimental cirrhotic liver were observed to have a low adenine nucleotide pool and a reduced energy charge similar to those of normal regenerating liver following hepatectom. The cirrhotic liver cells, moreover, showed some delay in increase in mitochondrial ATP synthesis, essential to liver regeneration.
It was suggested that proper medication of liver hydrolysates to a cirrhotic liver would increase nucleotide pool and also mitochondrial ATP synthesis resulting support and stimula-tion of liver regeneration.
