Abstract
The effect of vagotomy on hepatic regeneration after hepatic resection was studied experimentally using WKAH rat. The investigation were designed in the aspect of direct action of vagotomy and its influences on blood flow. The following results were obtained. 1) Significant retardation of recovery of postoperative liver weight and body weight ratio (LW/BW) were seen in the group where hepatectomy was accompanied by hepatic artery resection and vagotomy. 2) Portal blood flow showed no significant changes. 3) On the second postoperative days, LW/BW were significantly depressed in the vagotomy group and mitotic index (MI) showed lower level also. But these lowered tendency of LW/BW and MI became insignificant on the 7th. postoperative days. 4) Serum albumin and total cholesterol were lowered in the vagotomy group. In conclusion, vagotomy results retardation of hepatic regeneration after hepatectomy at the early phase. Furthermore, the changes of hepatic blood flow after vagotomy has no relation to hepatic regeneration.
