The effectiveness of Lyrica for night pain and sleeping disturbance after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair

Abstract
Background: We evaluated the effectiveness of Lyrica (pregabalin) for night pain and sleeping disturbance after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR).
Methods: Thirty one patients after ARCR were enrolled in this study. The mean age at surgery was 64 years old (41-81). The visual analogue scale of pain (VASP) and the visual analogue scale of sleep disturbance (VASSD) were assessed for 15 days after ARCR. In the patients with VASP of more than 5 or VASSD of more than 5 on the postoperative day (POD)1, Lyrica (75mg) was administrated from POD2 if they would like to have.
Results: Ten patients wanted to have Lyrica (group M), 10 did not (group N), and 2 stopped having it because of adverse effects. The average of VASP in post POD1 and that from POD2 to 15 were 8.1 and 4.0 in group M and 6.4 and 3.24 in group N, respectively. The average of VASSD in POD1 and that from the POD 2 to 15 were 7.0 and 3.7 in group M and 5.0 and 3.3 in group N. When we compared the temporal daily VASP and VASSD of both groups, group M was significantly higher than group N at POD7, 8, and 9 (p= 0.0015, p =0.0037, p= 0.0467, respectively) in VAS of SD. The improvement from POD1, in VASP on POD12 (p = 0.0327) and in VASSD on POD7, 8 (p= 0.0321, p= 0.0316) showed a significant difference in Mann-Whitney U test.
Conclusion: Lyrica significantly improved VASP and VASSD for night pain and sleeping disturbance after ARCR.
