INVESTIGATIONS OF OUTBREAK SITUATION OF TORNADOES ON AND AROUND JAPAN USING GIS

Abstract

Outbreaks of tornado in Japan are found frequently, recently. This recent increase of the number of observed tornadoes might be attributable to the fact that information by Japan Meteorological Agency has become available since 2007. In this study, in order to investigate the characteristics of tornado occurrence, occurrence locations of tornado are plotted on map of Japan for each factor, such as terrain category, season, time zone and weather factor. Almost tornadoes were confirmed to have occurred in the coastal area (terrain category I) or plains (terrain category II). All of tornadoes caused by typhoon are occurred on Pacific Ocean side of Japan
