Abstract
When considering intercultural understanding education, the reality is that “knowledge and understanding” of foreign languages and their cultural backgrounds alone are insufficient to address the various issues that may arise in communication. In the context of higher education, which is expected to nurture individuals capable of thriving in a globalized society, reexamining learning and teaching methods is an urgent challenge. This study explores the creation of new methods for intercultural understanding education in university-level English instruction by referencing the concept of improvisation, and conducting pilot studies. Specifically, it aims to implement new training methods that cultivate crucial abilities such as improvisational skills and empathy, which are essential for fostering the capacity not only to “understand” as knowledge but also to “act” as a skill. Amid calls for various reforms in university education prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic, the development of training methods feasible within Japan has become a pressing need. The ultimate goal is to establish a “simulation-based training method" that enables individuals to master appropriate and smooth communication methods, think independently, and take proactive action, thereby fostering “glocal” human resources. This paper will report on the implementation of these practices in classroom settings.
