Using the energy method, the authors have determined the approximate critical load, which acts on the middle point of the span of beam with narrow cross section, when the beam is subjected to an axial load W, the end conditions being simply supported. The approximate critical load [numerical factor] where m is a numerical factor, the value of which depends on [numerical formula] and l is length of a beam, B1 is the flexural rigidity of the beam, and C means the torsional rigidity.
