Abstract

Combustion behavior of carbon particle (s) is studied experimentally by varying oxygen concentration and initial particle size. Although the burning time for a single carbon particle depends on the oxygen concentration and initial particle size, the combustion rate constant is found to be independent of the initial particle size, which suggests that the single-particle combustion obeys the d2 law. For the dust combustion with carbon particles, flame propagation speed is measured at various dust and oxygen concentrations and initial particle sizes. Usefulness of the proposed parameter, which is the product of the flame propagation speed and the initial particle size, is shown in arranging experimental data when the initial particle size is less than about 20 μm.
