Abstract

Piston slap in reciprocating engines is considered to be the major source of cavitation erosion in water jackets and noise. Many papers have presented calculation models to predict it. Using our own model, we studied the effects of friction force and oil cushion, particularly squeeze and wedge effects. The characteristics of two separate oil films, both upper and lower skirt, were examined and we decided the boundary condition using FEM. The results of calculation showed good agreement with measured data and we concluded that oil film plays a very important role in reducing piston slap impacts.
