Abstract
This paper considers waka-themed Chinese poetry by Rikunyo which has been the focus of very little research to date. Part I gives a general outline of the main creation of waka-themed Chinese poetry in the Edo Period, and investigates the origins of sequences and poem collections of waka-themed Chinese poetry. Rikunyo’s waka-themed Chinese poetry was born within the trend for composing Chinese poetry on themes from waka which continued through generations from the Muromachi Period. Part II deciphers material related to Shinnin-Hosshinnō and Kōen-Nyūdōshinnō, and discusses the “scene” around which Rikunyo composed waka-themed Chinese poetry. Parts III and IV consider the waka-like elements in Rikunyo’s waka-themed Chinese poetry from the directions of adaptation of waka and method of composition, as well as use of Ton’a verse themes in Rikunyo’s waka-themed Chinese poetry.
In this way, this paper has been able to clarify the history of the creation and the special characteristics of waka-themed Chinese Poetry by Rikunyo, and reveals one aspect of the complexity of the history of Chinese poetry and history of waka poetry in the Late Edo Period.
