Abstract
Only a few examples have been reported for the synthesis of triarylbismuthanes having an electron-withdrawing group due to lack of suitable method for their synthesis. It is an important issue for us to synthesize and characterize such class of organobismuth compounds. Recently, we have reported the synthesis of triarylbismuthanes substituted by arenes, each bearing an electron-withdrawing substituent such as cyano, ester or nitro group. To the best of our knowledge, few examples have been appeared for the synthesis of pentavalent organobismuth derivatives bearing an electron-withdrawing substituent. Herein, we disclose the transformation of these triarylbsimuthanes to the corresponding triarylbismuth dihalides, bismuthonium ylides and bismuthonium salts. Furthermore, we clarify the effect of an electron-withdrawing substituent on the reactivity of triarylbismuthanes and triarylbismuth dihalides by comparison with the related compounds bearing an electron-donating group. Some spectroscopic characteristics of triarylbismuth dihalides will be also reported.
