Abstract
The reaction of phenacyl chloride and methoxide ion in dry methanol gave an acetal derivative, which means that mechanism of this reaction involves an epoxide intermediate. The reaction also gave an ether derivative, and the ratio of these two products was changed with substitution. The reaction mechanism is discussed in detail on the basis of the variation of the product ratio with substituent and the fraction of reaction.
