Abstract

A survey of Culicoides biting midges was carried out from June 23 to November 3, 2005 at the cattle barn and poultry house of Rakuno Gakuen University in Ebetsu, Hokkaido by using modified FHK-type light traps with CO2. A total of 990 Culicoides biting midges belonging to six taxa were captured. Among them, the C. sinanoensis · C. sanguisuga complex and C. maculatus were the predominant species in both barns. Individuals of the C. sinanoensis · C. sanguisuga complex were captured from late June to late August and showed one peak in late June.
