Abstract

During a survey of the population of Hyporhamphus intermedius (Cantor, 1842) in July of 2021, several Salanx ariakensis Kishinouye, 1902 were observed in the tidal upper reach of Chikugo River, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan (four collected specimens 82.9–113.1 mm of standard length, all females). This species has been known as an anadromous fish migrating to the upper reach of estuary from autumn to winter for spawning. This study represents the first report of summer occurrences of S. ariakensis in upper estuary.
