Abstract
Gas-barrier property is a most important factor for food packaging. Poly(vinylidene chloride) (PVDC) resin has been used as a gas-barrier material. However, PVDC resin is declining in face of environmental problems. Under these circumstances, ethylene vinyl alcohol co-polymer (EVOH) films, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-coated polypropylene films, silica or alumina-coated PET films, nano-composite resins and MXD6 nylon resin are becoming mainstreams for gas-barrier purpose. Recently, various types of oxygen scavenging resins have been developed and applied as active barrier packaging materials. The applications of active barrier resins for pouches, trays and bottles are also introduced.
