Abstract
Strontium and aragonite-calcite precipitationI. Sunagawa, Y. Takahashi and H. Imai (Yamanashi Inst. Gemmol. & Jewel. Arts)It is conclusively demonstrated on travertine samples consisting of alternating layers of calcite and aragonite precipitated from mineral spring at Kashio, Nagano Prefecture that metastable nucleation and growth of aragonite in aqueous solution occur in the presence of Sr. The correlation between Sr and metastable nucleation of aragonite is also established on aragonite crystals from other localities as. well. The correlation is discussed based on the modification of interface energy term in nucleation energy in the presence of Sr.Key words: Metastable nucleation, Calcite-aragonite, Travertine, Strontium*Corresponding author: i.sunagawa@nifty.com
