Calcium Carbonate minerals composing shell were studied by XRD for several species to elucidate their distribution and orientation in the shell. Aragonite crystals in pearl layer were oriented to c-axis direction however stacked randomly for a, b- axes directions. Calcite crystals showed relatively lower orientation than aragonite. These tendency of orientation was not found in calcium carbonate crystals synthesized in laboratory.
