Some Considerations on Correlation Coefficients Computed from Categorical Data

Abstract

　It is well known that Pearson's correlation is biased when it is computed from ordinal category data as in Likert scale. This paper first introduces the mechanism of the bias and what factors are related to it. Then，we introduce various methods to assign scores to categories and examine how different methods of assigning numbers affect correlation coefficients.
