First record of Trox nohirai (Coleoptera: Trogidae) from within a nest box of the Oriental dollarbird (Eurystomus orientalis)

Abstract

Previous studies suggested that Trox nohirai (Coleoptera: Trogidae) inhabits nests of the Ural owls (Strix uralensis). Here we report that adults of T. nohirai were found in a nest box of Oriental dollarbird (Eurystomus orientalis) in Niigata Prefecture, central Japan. This is the first record to be found T. nohirai from nests of E. orientalis. Trox nohirai are considered as decomposers of the sediment in the nests.
