This review summarizes the developments in insect physiology and ethology, since late Professor Shoziro Ishii edited “Recent Developments in Entomology” in 1981. Recently developed experimental techniques have brought rapid advancement in insect physiology. The concept of gene selection has dominated in Japan since the two books, “Selfish Gene” and “Sociobiology: The New Synthesis,” were translated into Japanese. This concept has given a profound influence on researchers studying in insect behavior. I expect future perspectives in insect physiology and ethology with interdisciplinary or integrated approaches to both immediate and proximate factors. Moreover, I hope that the Entomological Society of Japan serves as a basis for such researches.
