Abstract
In order to clear the relationship between uric acid and the pigment formation in the wings of butterfly, a few pterines have been discriminated by paper chromatography and the amount of uric acid has been measured.
It has been observed that the wings ofEurema hecabewhich has much xanthopterin in them contain more uric acid than those ofPieris meletaand white type ofColias hyale poligraphusof which wings have much leucopterin. On the contrary, the wings ofPapilio maac'ii satateiandNeptis acerishaving much melanin in them contain less uric acid than those ofPieris meleta and white type ofColias hyale.
Above mentioned quantitative relations among pterins, melanin and uric acid are much the same as the results of ARUGA'S studies on the larval integument ofBombyx mori.
