Abstract
Mulberry species in west Java and their peculiarities are as follows:
). Morus nigra L. with two strains, the common one and somewhat lustrous leaf strain.
). Morus alba L. with the peculiarities of the thick shoots and the brown color of the bark.
). Morus multicaulis P. with the peculiarity of the brown color of the bark.
). Morus alba L. var. tatarica with the peculiarities of the long style, the brown color of the bark and the remarkable purple color of the young shoots, considering a different strain from the original M. alba L. var. tatarica.
). Morus alba L. var. macrophylla with the peculiarities of the shape of idioblasts, having a big projection, and the form of leaves. It is impossible to determine the botanical situation of this tree at present, owing to the insufficient specimens and descriptions in references.
). Morus australis P. (Morus acidosa G.) with the peculiarities of the short style and the irregular form of leaves. This tree may be a different species or a hybrid one between M. australis P. and other species.
). Morus cathayana H. with the peculiarity that this tree is very much akin to M. alba L., therefore, it is safe to say that this is a strain of M. alba L.
). Regarding M. macroura M. and M. bombycis K., it is said that these species are found in west Java, but, as far as the author concerns, these species could not be observed in west Java, but, M. macroura M. was found in Jogjakarta.
). From the facts mentioned above, it is considered that there are some local differences in the features of mulberry trees, consequently, in order to classify mulberry trees in the world, mulberry trees in each region are classified respectively, then many data of classification should be discussed to make a complete classification system.
