The degree of orientation of the raw silk reeled with different finess was investigated by birefrigence. Birefrigence of the raw silk reeled with the MK line (very fine bave) was approximately similar to that of the standerd thread, while that of the raw silk reeled with the N5D line (very coarse have) was very low. In a range of reeling speed up to 120m/min, the degree of orientation of both samples increased with increasing reeling speed, and then showed a tendency to level-off. The correlation between the degree of orientation and the tensile properties was observed in the case of the MK line, while was not observed in the case of the N5D line. This may be caused by the low degree of orientation in amorphous region of N5D line.
