Abstract

The reinforcing power of lignin for SBR was enhanced by heating lignin-SBR coprecipitate, and oxidation of SBR in the co-precipitate was greatly delayed. The amount of the bound rubber (the fraction of SBR remaining inseparable from lignin by benzene extraction) formed by the binding of lignin with SBR in the co-precipitate increased with the time of heating. The activation energy for this binding reaction was obtained as 16 kcal/mol. This value is approximate to that for the dehydrogenative formation of free radicals in the induction period of the thermal oxidation of olefinic compounds. This coincidence of the two activation energy values and the antioxidating action of lignin leads an assumption possibility that the bond between lignin and SBR is formed by the adsorption of free radicals from SBR and lignin
