Abstract

It was previously reported that polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) colored to red brown by treating with iodine in an aqueous solution in the presence of potassium iodide. This color reaction was due to iodine absorbed on PVAc. In the present paper the equilibrium isotherms of iodine absorbed on PVAc were measured and the relation between the degree of polymerization of PVAc and amounts of iodine absorbed on PVAc were discussed. It was found that iodine absorbed on PVAc were nearly constant in a certain concentration of iodine without regard. to the degree of polymerization of PVAc, and that PVAc films absorbed iodine had the swelling of area and weight and the lower the degree of polymerization of PVAc, the greater the swelling of the polymer films.
It was also recognized that the swelling of vinyl acetate and methylacrylate copolymer films absorbed iodine gave the lower value than that of PVAc and polymethylacrylate blend polymer films absorbed iodine.
