Abstract
4-Methacryloyloxy chalcone (4MC) and 4′-Methacryloyloxy chalcone (4′MC) were prepared, and these monomers polymerized in THF by using benzoyl peroxide catalyst. The polymers obtained were soluble in THF. IR and UV spectra of these polymers showed the absorptions at 980, 1320cm-1. and at 310mμ respectively, assigned to benzalacetophenone (BAP), and so, it was confirmed that these polymers contained pendant BAP groups. The monomer reactivity ratios for copolymerizations of methyl methacrylate with 4MC and 4′MC were also determined in THF. The values obtained were: r1=0.56, r2=1.0 for methyl methacrylate (M1) -4MC, r1=0.55, r2=0.8 for M1-4′MC. Consequently, log (1/r1) were 0.25 for M1-4MC, 0.26 for M1-4′MC. From the relation of σ vs. log (1/r1) for copolymerizations of methyl methacrylate (M1) with alkyl and aryl methacrylates, σ values were estimated to be 0.37 for 4MC and 0.39 for 4′MC.
The films of these polymers and copolymers were crosslinked by irradiation of ultraviolet light. The crosslinking structures were ascertained by IR and UV spectrometries and solubulity measurement of films.
