Abstract

The effect of the newly developed vibration etching technique using a fissure needle for fissure sealing was investigated in vitro comparing with the conventional simple etching technique. Findings were as follows.
1. The simple etching technique failed to completely cleanse the fissures and remove the prismless enamel layers. Consequently, the penetrating sealant resin, if penetrated, did not form tags and separated from the enamel surfaces of fissure.
2. The vibration etching technique cleansed the fissures completely, removed the prismless enamel layers and enlarged the fissures to 100-150 μm in width as far as the fissure needle reached. Consequently, sealant resin penetrated into the enlarged fissure completely and adhered to the tooth substance tightly by the forming tags.
