Abstract
Animals with congenital cleft lip and palate are valuable models for the experimental study on growth and development of the craniofacial region.
CL/Fr strain mice were used in this experiment because of the high frequency of congenital cleft lip and palate. As a pilot study, normal C57/BL strain mice were bred experimentally with two different types of artificial milk, by Shukuta and by Hoshiba, and fresh rat milk. It was found that only fresh rat milk was suitable to breed the mice by human care. Our attempt at breeding was succeeded in CL/Fr strain mice with congenital incomplete cleft lip up to about the period of ablactation.
It would seem next to impossible to breed CL/Fr strain mice with the other types of cleft. This might be caused of associate anomalies of the internal organs or the heart.
