Abstract

We examined the utility of a molecular detection method of Bradysia odoriphaga Yang and Zhang, 1985 (Diptera: Sciaridae) in bulk samples of sciarid flies based on PCR using species-specific primers targeting the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene. In larvae and male adults, one individual of B. odoriphaga could be detected in bulk samples (10, 100, 200, 400, and 800 individuals) with Bradysia impatiens (Johannsen, 1912) by PCR using B. odoriphaga specific primers. These results indicate that this method is useful for the rapid and reliable detection of B. odoriphaga in bulk samples of sciarid flies collected in fields for monitoring this species.
