Pathogenicity of Steinernema carpocapsae (Weiser) against the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and suppression of feeding by the larvae in a Welsh onion field.

 I evaluated the entomopathogenic nematode, Steinernema carpocapsae as potential biocontrol agent to suppress the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua on Welsh onion. The pathogenicity of S. carpocapsae against the beet armyworm was surveyed under laboratory conditions. An inoculation of 100 infective juveniles (IJs) of S. carpocapsae killed all mid- and late instar larvae of the beet armyworm within two days, as well as all late instar larvae of the greater wax moth, Galleria mellonella, which are susceptible to S. carpocapsae. Inoculation of 100 and 1,000 IJs of S. carpocapsae killed 56% and 83% of beet armyworm pupae, respectively. I also investigated the efficacy of S. carpocapsae on the suppression of the damage by beet armyworm on Welsh onion fields. The number of damaged plants by the beet armyworm was successfully reduced to about 29% in the plot sprayed two times with S. carpocapsae compared to 28 days ago (start of the experiment), while the number increased to 367% in the untreated plot. These results suggested that S. carpocapsae is a promising biological control agent against the beet armyworm in Welsh onion fields.
