Abstract
In Tokyo Japanese, it is widely known that the pitch rises at the beginning of phrases, and this phenomenon is referred to as initial lowering or initial rise. This phenomenon is not observed when the initial syllable of the phrase is sonorant and heavy or when it has a lexical accent. By utilizing this phenomenon, this article presents data from recordings and argues that /ui/ forms diphthongs in Tokyo Japanese.
