Abstract

Burkholderia plantarii, B. vandii, and strains of B. gladioli isolated from vanda plants were characterized by chemotaxonomic methods, and their relation to authentic strains of other plant pathogenic bacterial species is discussed. B. plantarii and B. vandii were indistinguishable in the chemotaxonomic analysis. and the degree of sequence identity between them was 96%. We conclude that B. vandii is a synonym of B. plantarii. Three strains MAFF301728, MAFF301729, and MAFF301730 isolated from the vanda plants and identified as B. gladioli pv. gladioli, should be transferred to B. plantarii. We also clarified that the causal bacterium of bacterial brown rot of vanda is the true B. gladioli.
