Abstract
The aim of this paper is to evaluate rail container transport from shippers' view and to explore the possibilities of mil transport to promote green logistics. By mail questionnaires and interviews, we find 1) many shippers are now tackling environmental problems eagerly and think modal shift as an important issue, 2) majority of shippers are trying to use rail transport tactically, and some advanced shippers are frying to do strategically, and 3) forwarders and Japan Freight Railway are expected to play important roles as specialists. In order to construct green logistics systems based on the shippers' point of view, carriers and shippers are requested to cooperate with each other and play their own roles.
