Abstract
Photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) employing phase-correlated femtosecond pulse pairs enables to investigate ultrafast dynamics of photo-excited nanostructured metals, where anomalous local fi eld enhancements are induced accompanied with surface plasmon resonances. Surface plasmon modes with specific coherence times and eigen frequencies possess their individual time evolutions of amplitudes, phases, and shapes of oscillatory motions, which are visualized by the time-resolved PEEM method. As well as the localized surface plasmon modes, propagating surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are also investigated through imaging of surface polarization beats established by SPP-light interferences.
