Abstract
Japanese laser research is reviewed. The commercial applications of semiconductor lasers and laser fusion research are conspicuous areas of their contribution. The manuscript is prepared in response to the invitation to contribute to the 10th anniversary issue of the The Review of Laser Engineering of the Laser Society of Japan.
