Abstract
Optical fiber communication systems are widely introduced into telecommunication networks since 1980's. The sub-nanosecond optical pulses are used in recent practical single-mode fiber transmission systems. This paper discusses the future possibility of ultra-short pulses application to communication systems. High-speed signal processing capability is discussed, and optical short-pulse generation, detection and multiplexing technology are described. It is expected that the future ultra-high speed communication systems will have the very large video communication service capability.
