Two kinds of optical fibers have been developed for 1.55 μm long-haul systems. One is adispersion-shifted fiber and the other is a pure-silica core single mode fiber. The former will beused for high-capacity systems and the latter for long repeater-length systems. Fluoride glass fibershave the potential for achieving extremely long repeater-length if many technological obstacleswere overcome. Another future issue in optical fiber fabrication is the reduction of optical fibercosts. The higher production rate is needed to bring fibers to subscriber loop systems.
