Waveguide semiconductor modulators have been classified, and typical characteristics of the modulators have been reviewed. Short pulse generation and optical gate operation with non-linear properties in the modulators have been described. Much shorter pulse generation by us-ing tandem-connected electroabsorption modulators has been also described.
