Abstract
Evolution of the laser in the twentieth century is reviewed. Invention of an ammonia maser in 1954 was the starting point of the laser to appear in 1960. Developments of solid-state lasers, semiconductor lasers, liquid lasers, gas lasers, laser theories, short-pulse lasers, and novel lasers of late years are summarized respectively.
