It has been shown that the sensitivity of Staphylococeus aureus to phenolic inhibitors can be influenced by the presence of gram-negative bacteria in the environment. In some instances, the presence of Salmonella schottmuelleri, Proteus mirabilis or Aerobacter aerogenes can increase the resistance of staphylococci to these inhibitors while in other cases these organisms can make Staph. aureus more sensitive to the compounds.
