Abstract
The formulation on size dependence of strength established theoretically for isotropic materials and for aligned fiber composite materials by Christensen and others is experimentally confirmed to the tensile strength for single carbon fiber and resin impregnated CFRP strand in this study. The tensile strength of single carbon fiber with different fiber lengths and the tensile strength of resin impregnated CFRP strand with different lengths and different number of filaments are measured statistically. As a result, it is cleared that the size dependence of these tensile strengths agree well with the predicted results by substituting the shape parameters of Weibull distribution for these tensile strengths in Christensen’s formulation.
