Abstract

The characteristics of incineration residues (fly ash and bottom ash) are defined by many factors within incineration systems. This paper focuses on fly ash and explains the influences of incineration technology factors on fly ash characteristics. From the viewpoint of leaching behavior after disposal in the landfill site, the characteristics of fly ash are explained based on: 1) metal contents of the waste; 2) incinerator type (stoker/fluidized bed); 3) dust collector type (electric precipitator/fabric filter); 4) heat recovery system; 5) acid gas neutralizing method (wet/dry) and the neutralizing alkaline agents. Furthermore, three kinds of solidification/stabilization treatment methods for heavy metals in fly ash, chemical stabilization, cement solidification and carbonation are introduced. Finally, the importance of considering the final disposal of fly ash when incinerating solid waste is emphasized.
