Abstract

A symposium on "Relocation of the Hiroshima University and the Formation of a New Campus-city" was held on July 22 and 23, 1993 at Higashi-Hiroshima campus of the Hiroshima University, as the 38th research meeting of the Man-Environment Research Association. Processes of this large scale relocation and its impact on the university community as well as on the newly formed campus-city of Higashi-Hiroshima were conceptualized as an unusual occasion of person-environment transitions at a macro scale. Various changes in physical, interpersonal and socio-cultural environments were reported and discussed within a theoretical framework of organismic-developmental approach. The symposium started with invited speeches by Dr. Yoshitake on "The experiences in Tsukuba Science City" as pioneering case on the subject and by Dr. Wapner on "Restructuring of a complex person-in-environment system: The relocation of a University." Active participants in the project of relocation of the Hiroshima University presented their views on the total process, and evaluation from the viewpoints of environmental psychology, architecture, and environmental design on this large-scale transitions were presented and discussed.
