Abstract
Of three species of anopheline mosquitoes breeding in Tokyo district, Anopheles sineroides has, morphologically, intermediate features between A. hyrcanus var. sinensis and A. koreicus. That is to say, the number of the outer clepeal hairs of A. sineroides, the most important specific feature in the larval stage, falls between those of A. hyrcanus var. sinensis and A. koreicus. The white patches on the costal vein and black patches on the sixth vein of A. sineroides are akin to those of A. koreicus and the white patches on the proboscis of A. sineroides are the same with those of A. hyrcanus var. sinensis. The author studied the morphological features of the male hypopigium of these three species to elucidate to which species A. sineroides would be more akin in this respect. The male hypopigium of A. sineroides is distinctly different from that of A. koreicus in the following 4 features. 1) The lobes of 9th tergite of A. sineroides are long and slender in shape while those of A. koreicus are short and thick in shape. 2) The phallosome of A. sineroides and A. koreicus is the same in length but is distinctly broader in the former than in the latter. 3) The number and length of leaflets of phallosome are different in these two species. They are more numerous and shorter in A. sineroides than in A. koreicus. 4) The side-piece of A. koreicus has a distinct dent while that of A. sineroides has not. The hypopigium of A. hyrcanus var. sinensis is quite simillar to that of A. sineroides in those features stated above except in the number and length of the leaflets of phallosome. They are less numerous and shorter in A. hyrcanus var. sinensis than in A. sineroides. A. sineroides which may be regarded as a intermediate type between A. hyrcanus var. sinensis and A. koreicus is more akin to the former in the morphology of male hypopigium.
